Shastar Naam Maala - The Sikh Rosary of Weapons

Updated: Jan 23, 2019

A contemporary handwritten manuscript containing Shastar Naam Maala alongside other writings on the Tenth Master

This scripture/bani is integral to understanding the importance of Shastar/Weapons in the Khalsa ideology established by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. It constitutes one of the largest sections of Gurbani written by the Tenth Guru in Sri Dasam Granth (from ang 723 - 811 (out of a total of 1428+). Countless names of weapons are denoted and how their uses vary.

Alongside the Praise of each Shastar, Guru sahib explains such ideologies as;

-How guru sahibs praise of shastar and the goddess of death 'Kaali' are akin to the destructive force of the almighty Lord

" Lord, you are death, you are the Goddess of death 'Kali', you are the Tegh/Broad sword and arrow. "

-How just as Raam Chandr defeated evil by killing Raavan and Kumbhkarn, and Sri Krishan by killing Kesi and Kanss, Shastar are blessed to the Khalsa to defeat evil and wrong-doing.

" You Lord are Raam, you are Shri Krishan, you are the forms of Vishnu (). "

-How the Kings of this world owe their success to Shastar.

" Because of your blessing (ਬਰਦਾਨ) the Kings have come to rule this world. "

-How the knowledge of the Vedas and other spiritual literature, and the philosophers of past ages have prospered due to the blessing of Shastar and similarly we the Khalsa and our Gurmat Gyaan/Divine Knowledge will prosper with the bestowing of Shastar upon us.

" Because of you, spiritual knowledge (such as the Vedas), philosophers, spiritual preachers have prospered."

-How Shastar are a bestower of Karma and put an end to this mortal body but the soul remains immortal and eternal, continuing to exist in a non-physical dimension

"You Lord, remove the soul of the enemy, before the Kirpan/sword has even made contact with the body."
